Meeting called to order @19:32 (7:32 pm).

  • Review of Minutes from April 2025 - minutes can be found on the HCA website

https://www.huntingtononline.org/meeting-minutes-1. Minutes were approved unanimously.

  • Treasurer’s Report (MR).

  • HCA member dues are due in January or on a rolling basis. $12:00/year.

https://www.huntingtononline.org/join-hca. Please consider supporting our small volunteer

organization.

  • Dorothy and Mark are going to the bank to get verified to have access to the account. Will have report

in June. If you are interested in knowing your membership status, please contact Mark.

  • Committee and Other Reports

MVCCA (Mount Vernon Council of Citizens’ Associations, Inc.) If you are interested in volunteering, please

go to the MVCCA website www.mvcca.org for more information. You can also contact Tamara, and she can

connect people who would like to volunteer. Committees are always looking for volunteers! Dorothy will

get an updated list of active committees and share that in June.

  • Environment and Recreation (E & R) - Alan Ruof. Meets next Wednesday. E & R will have a joint

meeting with the Public Safety and Transportation Committee (PS & T) to talk about a resolution on

the Express Lanes across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Issues include the termination of express lanes

in/near the neighborhood, resulting in increased traffic and backups. Jason and Mark attended a

recent VDOT meeting regarding the express lanes, and noted that the plan is for privately owned toll

lanes. The resolution includes a request for preservation of metro access and further study of the

impacts in the area. There is also a question about what will happen during construction, and there

was no discussion of that during any of the VDOT meetings.

  • Planning and Zoning (P & Z) - Ray Novitske. Developers/(the County?) filed an amendment to the

comprehensive plan to build a Lidl where Office Depot now sits at the junction of North Kings Highway,

South Kings Highway, and Richmond Highway. Looking to develop a 7-or-8-story building. The footprint

of Lidl will be smaller than normal. Liz added an observation about the fact that they are putting in a

Lidl in a saturated area rather than nearer to Huntington at the Aventon or Parker Condos.

  • Fire Station-homeless shelter committee – Ray Novitske. Part of the project to build a firestation,

homeless shelter, affordable housing, and transitional housing was cut: specifically the affordable

housing component. Transitional housing (rentals) was expanded to 3 - 4 bedroom units to

accommodate families. The homeless shelter will not allow sex offenders based on proximity to a

childcare center, so transitional housing will be available for families.

  • Public Safety and Transportation Committee (PS & T) - Mark Rogers. No specific update given.

  • Education Committee - Mark Rogers. Previous meetings focused on boundary issues. The goal is to

make boundaries more cohesive, to have closer neighborhood schools, and better feeder school areas.

For example, the closest elementary school to Huntington is across Telegraph Ave. and it’s not safe for

kids to cross, so they must either be driven or bused. Also High schoolers travel a distance to Edison

High School. Mark will send Dorothy the link to maps.

  • Budget and Finance. No update.

  • Stormwater – No update.

  • HCA Vice-President’s Report - Dorothy Edwards.

  • Thanked Tamara for mentoring her and transitioning duties to her and the other officers.

  • Send ideas for community events.

  • Hoping to advertise HCA meetings to get more participation.

  • HCA Member Time (if you would like to discuss a specific topic, please email Dorothy Edwards, HCA

president prior to the meeting at president@huntingtononline.org.

  • Ray mentioned the art exhibit this weekend at the Huntington Community Center. 4-6:00 pm. There

are currently 8 - 10 artists who will be showing their work. The community center will provide

refreshments. It’s not too late if others want to participate, and it’s a great way to support the

community center and meet neighbors.

  • Karen Schmitz mentioned she will be in attendance and showing artwork, and promoted an activity

during the show - an art class workshop.

  • The Huntington Community Center is underutilized, and they are interested in hosting more

community events.

  • Emmaly Kiley added thoughts about an art mural on the white brick wall at Biscayne and Huntington,

and perhaps getting a new Huntington sign as well. This would help make this area feel more like a

neighborhood. She is seeking permission (as the house on the corner of Biscayne is private property)

and funding. Several neighbors will continue to explore this project.

  • The meeting was adjourned at 20:15.
