Huntington Community Association Meeting

1. Welcome and Introductions:

  • Art Ovalle, President

2. Guest Speaker(s):

  • Fairfax County Police, Crime Prevention Officer, Robert Urps

  • 100 neighborhood watch groups in Officer Urps’ area: from Telegraph ٍRd. to the Potomac River, from 495 to Fort Belvoir

  • Week after tax day will do community shred event

  • Also do drug take backs to clear out medicine cabinets

  • Larceny from cars is number one crime in the entire area, not just the Huntington neighborhood—lock your doors, take your valuables inside

  • Squeaky wheel gets the grease—contact Police Department to report speeding incidents—make sure to include time frames for speed violators

  • Police Service Areas (PSA) between Telegraph, Rt 1, and Kings Highway down to Lockheed then down to Frye are two busiest PSAs in Fairfax County because of density of development, metro, and access to major roadways

  • Report incidents, otherwise there will not be any response

  • Losing 6-9 officers per month due to attrition

  • 35 officers graduate per academy class, two classes per year, but losing 95 per year

  • Animal related complaints handled by non-emergency numbers

  • Gangs present on Rt 1, mostly gang on gang incidents, gangs present in every part of Fairfax Co

3. HCA Committee Reports:

  • Mount Vernon Council of Community Associations (MVCCA)

  • General Council Meeting – Art Ovalle

  • Brief conversation about Embark: public comment period is wrapping up

  • Chik-fil-A fighting to get a spot on Rt 1 and Huntington; MVCCA not supportive, worried about traffic

  • County trying to get Riverside or Ourisman dealership to buy the motel/bank/Sunoco strip of land

  • Metro station; upper parking lot has been closed for a while due to dilapidated condition; issue raised to Supervisor Storck, question was raised whether Storck should write a letter to WMATA about their plan to deal with it; Art will follow up with Storck

  • North Point development (former Safeway supermarket near Kings Highway) on hold; HUD funds and other grants being held by the Administration; Mazda, Ledos Pizza, Shell

  • Wesley Homes/former A&R development may also be impacted

  • Planning and Zoning - Ray Novitske

  • Meeting canceled

  • Transportation - Jeff Woodward

  • Not present

  • Environment and Recreation - Alan Ruof

  • Meeting next week

  • Huntington Levee Update

  • Steel sheet piling will be covered in concrete for I-wall

  • Too cold to compact soil, so they have paused that; still have a little over a foot to go

  • Pump stations; most below ground work complete; steel work that has been erected will form structures for cranes that will lift pumps to service them, building will be built around the frames; temporary pumps will be brought in soon

  • Will leave gaps at either end of the levee to allow water to flow in and out until permanent pumps are installed; October is target for installment of permanent pumps and filling of levee gaps

  • All work on schedule so far

  • Meeting next Wednesday; agenda will include:

  • Budget

  • Recommendation for maximum tax rate

4. New Business/Action Items/Updates:

  • Fairfax Board of Supervisors Approved the Comprehensive Plan amendment for Huntington Club Condominiums – 2601 Indian Drive, Alexandria, VA. 22303

  • Fairfax Board of Supervisors Approved the Comprehensive Plan amendment for Capital Investment Advisors – 2560 Huntington Avenue, Alexandria, VA. 22303

  • Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Parking Fee Pilot Program – Parking Fee changes go into effect on February 5, 2018.

  • 6 month program; will charge on Saturdays and our parking district does not prohibit parking on Saturdays; people should report increased non-resident parking; report via mtvernon@fairfaxcounty.gov

5. Old Business/Updates:

  • Final Salute Home Project – 5836 Biscayne Drive

  • Construction advancing but no formal update

  • WALLACE & COLUCCI

  • Changing plan to all two over two town-homes probably because of Midtown concern about height; just recently filed; 64 units

  • Best case scenario would break ground end of 2019

  • Mount Eagle Park Access Road Relocation - Stout & Teague Property (Top of Hill Near Huntington Metro) – Meeting end of January

6. Upcoming Local Events in Fairfax County:

  • 31st Annual Town Meeting – Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 7:45am, at Mount Vernon High School

7. Other Community Issues:

  • Waiting to hear back from County about speed bumps on Fenwick

  • We are good to go on street lighting program, but could be a significant wait until LED street lights are installed
